CHAPBOOKS (10)

I don't write or publish much poetry anymore now that I focus my writing practice on novels.
I started publishing the odd poem here and there back in 1995. At that time, it was just fun to string together words just to hear how they might resonate disparately - usually at the expense of making much sense. I was part of the old Xerox (mail-art has seen a reprise if we consider Serse Luigetti, et al) and chapbook culture (which has also seen a resurgence). I did the readings thing and knew some of the mainstays of the Ottawa poetry scene such as Jim Larwill, rob mclennan, Steve Zytveld, Kathryn Hunt, et al. Shortly after I entered university, I left poetry alone for seven years. I came back to it with a thirst for experimentation, connecting with a new online breed of VisPo and asemic poetry engineers like John Moore Williams, Matina Stamatakis, mIEKAL aND, and so on. I cultivated virtual connections with people like the prolific Felino Soriano and dozens of others. I decided to leave well enough alone on the poetry front, perhaps given that there is far too much of it online and that I was feeling stale. That, plus my obligations to teaching, research, and novel writing meant that it had to be shelved - perhaps for another seven year hiatus. |
